Technology in the physics lab

DAY ONE

Introductions and overview

Science/Technology at Thacher

State standards/Objectives

Student preconceptions

Assessment tools inc. FCI, MB, and Ranking Tasks

Introduction to a variety of resources:

Texts including Physics for Computer Age CD

    Electronic Teacher Classroom Resources

    C3P

    CASTLE Project

    CBL and MBL

    JITT (Just In Time Teaching)

    Interactive Physics and Workbook

    Interactive Journey Through Physics CD

    Web Assign

.

Each participant will receive copies of texts, software and

support materials provided by Prentice-Hall, John Wiley and McGraw-Hill

The remaining time will involve investigating each of these resources

in detail. Each instructor will have class time to pursue

his/her own interests once familiar with the products available.

Calculator Based Lab.s

Pros and Cons of CBL.s

CBL vs. MBL vs. CBL2.

Introduction to TI calculator, CBL unit, probes/sensors, programs and the computer software.

Tech support and support materials.

Transferring programs - Using Graphlink software

Motion sensor

Expt. Take A Hike

Data Collection - list manipulation and pic files. Importing and exporting.

Data Analysis - regression commands, including use of Graphical Analysis software

DAY TWO.

Advanced calculator functions - quadratics and rates of change.

Analysis of Bouncing Ball

C3P (Comprehensive Conceptual Curriculum in Physics). This is a disc that draws together many of the most recent and successful approaches to teaching physics. It focuses on the students’ exploration and observation of phenomena.

Projects

DAY THREE

Force Sensor

Expt. Making Cents Of Math

Trouble Shooting Tips

Pressure and temperature sensors

Expt. Gas Laws

IJTP (Interactive Journey Through Physics) is a disc that reviews concepts through video, simulation and problem solving.

CASTLE Project introduces students to the concepts of electricity and magnetism through the use of capacitors initially. It is a series of lab. based assignments that the student can work through at his/her own pace.

DAY FOUR

Interactive Physics Simulations.

Just In Time Teaching including physlets

Virtual Quantum Mechanics

Audio/visual resources

Internet sites

Web Assign - a program that allows you to create assignments on the web from their database of questions from many texts. Students can log in and get instant feedback on their achievement.

Finish projects
