The Grapes of Wrath
Summary:
The students will create a multi-media presentation that will require them to use internet resources to gather data, analyze it and then synthesize it into a new product. The essential questions answered have to do with experientially recreating the experience of living through the Dust Bowl and migrating to California, as portrayed in THE GRAPES OF WRATH.

Standards:
LANGUAGE ARTS

Demonstrate control of grammar, diction, and paragraph and sentence structure and an understanding of English usage.

Produce legible work that shows accurate spelling and correct punctuation and capitalization.

Interpret and evaluate the various ways in which events are presented and information is communicated by visual image makers (e.g., graphic artists, documentary filmmakers, illustrators, news photographers).

Evaluate when to use different kinds of effects (e.g., visual, music, sound, graphics) to create effective productions.

Deliver reflective presentations: Explore the significance of personal experiences, events, conditions, or concerns, using appropriate rhetorical strategies (e.g., narration, description, exposition, persuasion).

Analyze several historical records of a single event, examining critical relationships between elements of the research topic.

Deliver multimedia presentations:

a. Combine text, images, and sound by incorporating information from a wide range of media, including films, newspapers, magazines, CD-ROMs, online information, television, videos, and electronic

media-generated images.

b. Select an appropriate medium for each element of the presentation.

c. Use the selected media skillfully, editing appropriately and monitoring for quality.

d. Test the audience's response and revise the presentation accordingly.

Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of discourse (e.g., purpose, speaker, audience, form) when completing narrative, expository, persuasive, or descriptive writing assignments.

Outcomes and Assessment:
Students will gain knowledge of the Dust Bowl and migration experience of families from the affected states. The students will use internet navigation skills, gather data, analyze and synthesize it into a new product.

The students will create a muti-media project for presentation which will be assessed by a teacher- created rubric.
