From Lewis Structures to Molecular Shapes: an online tutorial and quiz
Summary:
This activity is designed to be a follow up to a lecture or hands-on exercise in using Lewis dot structures to determine the shapes of simple molecules. The students will review and reinforce their ability to:

1. Write a Lewis dot structure of a molecule based on that molecule's chemical formula.

2. Label and draw the geometry and shape around any bonded atom based on this Lewis dot structure.

3. Define and distinguish between these terms: bonding electron domain, unbonding electron domain.

Grade Level: 9,10,11,12

Curricular Area:
Chemistry

Class Time Required:
10-20 min. to explain what to do (Estimated)

Standards:
Last year my students could have benefitted from a more interactive and visual approach to understanding bonding and how it pertains to molecular structure. The CA Standard that addresses this area is high school chemistry #2. (Chemical Bonds)- e. Students know how to draw Lewis dot structures; and f. Students know how to predict the shape of simple molecules and their polarity from Lewis dot structures.

Learning and Teaching Activities:
As a review, this tutorial is best used as a homework assignment after a lecture on this topic. Students will have problems only if the server is down (they cannot access the web page) or they do not read ALL the directions.

Outcomes and Assessment:
The students will demonstrate their mastery of the above-mentioned skills by taking an online multiple choice quiz. This quiz will give the students immediate feedback which they can use to assess their own understanding of the concepts on the tuturial. Hopefully, this feedback will help them when it comes time to take the real test.
