Chemical Change Experiments
Summary:
Students will learn about the formation of the Earth's basic elements by a demonstration of chemical change experiments to assist them in a visual understanding of these chemical changes that occur between atoms and molecules. In addition, students will use the scientific method format to create a hypothesis and draw conclusions about "What is a chemical change?"
Grade Level: 9,10,11

Class Time Required:
2 hours (Estimated)

Standards:
These experiments will teach students that "Biological, chemical, and physical properties of matter result from the ability of atoms to form bonds based on electrostatic forces between electrons and protons, and between atoms and molecules," as stated in the California Content Standards.

Learning and Teaching Activities:
Students should have prior knowledge of writing detailed lab reports in the scientific method. A review of the steps of scientific method may be appropriate for some students before the lab demonstation. Students should include information about the chemical changes that have occurred in the experiments between sulfuric acid and sugar, and calcium carbonate (limewater solution) and carbon dioxide. In addition, they will be presented with a PowerPoint demonstration that illustrates these reactants and products. Additional web-link information should be available to students before and after the lab demonstration.

Outcomes and Assessment:
Students will be required to recompose these experiments into scientific method and write a detailed essay type conclusion that demonstrates their understanding of the types of chemical change that have occurred and how these might influence bond formations. They will complete chemical reaction questions and be required to show all the reactions that have occurred as part of their scientific method lab write-up.

1. 1 test tube of limewater solution

2. plastic straw

3. small quantity of 12 molar sulfuric acid (reagent) 5-10mls

4. 100ml beaker containing small quantity of sucrose (table sugar)

5. safety goggles

6. fume hood

7. internet access for web links

8. LCD projector for Power Point presentation
