Introduction to Matter
Summary:
Grade Level: 10,11,12

Curricular Area:
Chemistry

Class Time Required:
5-7 hours (Estimated)

Standards:
Understanding of the classification of matter is the basis for understanding atomic and molecular structure. My students have had problems in identifying whether a substance is a pure substance or a mixture. These concepts plus the idea that pure substances can be categorized as compounds and elements will be explored. This lesson will lay the foundation for understanding the relationship between elemental properties and their position in the Periodic Table.

CA Content Standard, Chemistry:

1a. How to relate the position of an element in the Periodic Table to its atomic number and atomic mass.

1b. How to use the Periodic Table to identify metals, nonmetals, and halogens.

Investigation and Experimentation Standard

1d. Formulate explanations by using logic and evidence.

Learning and Teaching Activities:
Students will produce a PowerPoint multimedia project on an assigned element. The project will identify specific physical and chemical properties of the element. Students will present their project to the class to demonstrate their understanding of elemental properties. Students will the work collaboratively to arrange elements into groups with similar chemical characteristics. Based on the element's properties students will work in groups to logically arrange the elements into a table.
