World War II Newspaper Project--"The Greatest Generation"

Summary:
The project is designed as a culminating assignment to the unit on WWII. The focus is on both the war abroad and conditions on the home front. Students will exercise interviewing skills, along with reading, writing and research skills. The project also encourages creative thinking. Students will evaluate advances made, and problems created, by the WWII generation.

This WWII activity is an excellent way to tap into the critical thinking strand in the standards. The students are required to research, analyze, extrapolate, and synthesize information. The activity also targets the 11.7 strand in the California social science content standards.

| Learning and Teaching Activities: |
Some students may have difficulty with the technology involved. Research skills will be addressed. Students will using a variety of journalistic writing styles learned in their language arts class and apply that knowledge to history. Students will also work on listening skills as they will be expected to conduct oralo histories. The end product will be a newspaper reflecting the important issues during the early forties.

| Outcomes and Assessment: |
Students will be given checklists, questionaires, as well as model of examples of desired examples. A rubric will be provided. A unit test will be given at the end of the unit.
