Summary:
This webquest was designed as a final assignment for my unit on Dr. Seuss. I spend about a month focusing on Dr. Seuss literature before assigning this webquest. This is my first webquest. I choose this topic because I thought it would be highly motivating to students.

In this webquest students have the opportunity to read Dr. Seuss stories and then they research amusement parks around the country. Once they have completed their research they must design their own amusement park based on the Dr. Seuss stories they have read.

Materials Needed:
You will need a collection of Dr. Seuss books for your students to read. These are available at the public library. You only need one copy of each.

If they are doing a web page you will need a web authoring program like Claris Home Page.

If they are doing multimedia presentations you will need power point or hyperstudio.

You can do this project in lab all at one time or have groups do their research a little at a time in the classroom with only 1 computer.

Procedure
Opening:You will first be placed into groups of 4 students.

Each person is required to read at least 5 different Dr. Seuss stories. While you are reading them , pay attention to ways you could use information in the story as part of an amusement park. If you need suggestions for stories you could read go to the list of Dr. Seuss Books. You can read the following stories on the web: How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Lorax, The Cat in the Hat, My Many Colored Days, The Zax, and Fox in Sox.

Next, research about the life of Dr. Seuss at this site: Seuss biography.

Development:Next, research about amusement parks. All amusement parks have certain characteristics. What are they? Have each member research about a different amusement park and make a list of what types of things you would find there. Use the following to help you. Busch Gardens/Sea World, Magic Mountain, Six Flags, Knotts, Universal Studios, Disneyland.

Next, study the Universal City Seuss Landing site. This is a Dr. Seuss theme park in Florida. Make sure that your design is different from this one.

Once you have finished all of your research. your next step is to each pick a different role: Ride manager, concession manager, artistic director, and park coordinator. The ride manager designs the different rides that will be found in your amusement park. The concession manager decides on all the food and restaurant in the park. The artistic director designs the parks artistic design, and the park coordinator designs the grounds and the lay out of the park.

Once you have selected your roles,it is time to decide what to name your amusement park and what types of thing you want to include in it. Complete the amusement park design page questions.

Closing:Once you have designed the park it is time to create your presentation. You may either make a website that explains about your park, a HyperStudio or PowerPoint presentation, you may do one on paper and poster board if you do not have access to a computer or a combination of any of the above. Your presentation must include: A map of your park , parking information, food information, description of rides, the history of the park, shows and attractions, hours of operation, cost for admission, and special services you offer. Other things you can include are shopping, hotel accommodation, and what to do and see. For an example see Knotts Berry Farm web page. http://www.knotts.com/Guest/Info.htm
