The Task

You will choose and follow one of the following scenarios:

1. You are the owner of a fleet of transportation ships in late-17th century England.  You realize that the economic and social conditions in England are forcing many people from various social and economic backgrounds to look toward these new British Colonies as a place to begin a second chance.  In the hopes of increasing your business, and thus your profits, you are going to create a persuasive brochure enticing people to come to the Colonies. You will need to acknowledge the dangers and the potential risks associated with this new land, but you will want to minimize them so that they do not deter potential customers.  You will include historical facts and graphics to support your persuasive text.
2. You are a religious reformer who has settled a colony that promotes religious tolerance. You will create a brochure that encourages others who want to escape religious persecution to come to the colonies.  You will need to discuss conditions in England and the rest of Europe that created the need for religious freedom.  You will want to promote the “industries” and amenities available in the new colonies.  Also, while you are very tolerant of different religions, other settlements in the Colonies are not, and you will need to warn certain religious groups of the places they will not be welcome, while still promoting the positive aspects of your own colony.  You will include historical facts and graphics to support your persuasive text.
3. You are a wealthy tradesman or farmerin the Colonies.  While your business is successful, you want to encourage non-competing industries and trades so that more goods can be produced locally, thus reducing the cost of those items.  You will create a brochure that appeals to farmers, tradesmen, and manufacturers, and direct them toward the geographic areas most suited to their business.  You also recognize the need for a large labor force, so you want to encourage people who can't afford the passage to come to the Colonies as indentured servants.  You will need to discuss the aspects of the indenture and the length of service, as well as the opportunities available when the indenture period ends. You will include historical facts and graphics to support your persuasive text.

You will use the Internet to gather your data, and you will use a word processing program and other publishing aids to create your finished product.
